Transposition

2016 - 2017

Transposition explores the false clarity of categorical thinking within Western culture—a tendency to divide the world into binaries: Nature and Culture, digital and physical, chaos and harmony. These distinctions, long treated as a given, are in fact produced, maintained, and blurred by the very systems—technological, visual, political—that claim to make them legible.

In an time shaped by media saturation and communication technologies, the perceived boundaries between urbanity and environment, screen and terrain, become increasingly porous. Transposition meditates on this entanglement: the ways in which categories like “Nature” and “City” are not opposites but co-produced, continuously redefined through their mutual influence.

The works in Transposition build a hybrid visual language from the raw materials of these perceived categories. They reassemble fragments of architecture, terrain, interface, and image into compositions that bear the name “landscape”—while simultaneously questioning the authority of that name. By appropriating and reconfiguring the genre’s formal tropes, Transposition turns the power of naming back onto itself, exposing how the visual vocabulary of “landscape” disciplines what we expect from “Nature”. In doing so, the work resists the fixity of inherited frameworks, revealing a space where nature, urbanity, and technology operate not as discrete domains, but as mutually embedded forces: in tension, in collaboration, and in flux.
